Sweet Perfume

Verse

2 Corinthians 2:14-15 (NLT)

"But thanks be to God! He always leads us in victory through Christ. God uses us to spread the Good News everywhere like a sweet perfume. Our lives are a Christ like fragrance rising up to God."

Reflection

Have you ever caught the scent of honeysuckle on a summer evening? Before you see the vine, before you know where it is growing, its sweet fragrance fills the air. The aroma announces its presence long before your eyes find its source.

Paul uses a similar image in this passage. He says that God uses us to spread the knowledge of Christ everywhere like a sweet perfume. We are the aroma of Christ in the world.

What strikes me about this verse is that Paul does not tell us to create a fragrance. He simply says we are the fragrance when we are being led by Christ.

Perhaps the better question is not, "What do I need to do to smell more like Jesus?" but, "What might be blocking the fragrance of Christ from flowing through me?"

Sometimes the scent of Christ is masked by hurry, stress, self-reliance, or the need to prove ourselves. We become so focused on accomplishing things for God that we forget to enjoy being with God. Yet a flower does not strive to produce fragrance. It remains connected to its source of life, and its fragrance naturally follows.

The aroma of Christ is often revealed in ordinary moments. It is patience when interrupted. Kindness when tired. Gentleness when correcting. Compassion when someone is struggling. Gratitude in the midst of difficulty. Humility that points attention away from ourselves and toward God.

The sweetest fragrance does not come from impressive accomplishments. It comes from a life surrendered to Christ. As we spend time in His presence, His character begins to permeate our own. People may not always be able to identify what is different about us, but they sense something. They leave encouraged, seen, valued, and loved.

Like the scent of honeysuckle carried on the breeze, the fragrance of Christ often reaches people before they recognize its source. May our lives be so filled with His presence that wherever we go, others catch the fragrance of Jesus before they ever hear His name.

Steps

  1. Spend more time with Jesus than with your responsibilities.

  2. Release the need to prove yourself.

  3. Practice gratitude throughout the day.

  4. Look for opportunities to extend patience, kindness, and compassion in ordinary interactions.

  5. Ask God to reveal anything that is masking or blocking the fragrance of Christ in your life.

Journal

  • What fragrance do people experience when they leave my presence?

  • What part of my life currently smells more like stress than peace?

  • Am I leading from communion with God or from my own competence?

  • Where is God inviting me to slow down and simply enjoy His presence? To smell the honeysuckle?

  • What would it look like for Christ to become more noticeable and for me to become less noticeable?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, make my life a pleasing fragrance to You. Remove anything that masks Your presence in me. Teach me to abide rather than strive, to love rather than perform, and to trust rather than control. Fill me with Your peace, kindness, humility, and grace. May those who encounter me experience the aroma of Christ and be drawn closer to You. Let my life carry the sweet perfume of Your presence wherever I go. In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
